One of the most common stereotypes about Italians is their superstition. Well, there is always a kernel of truth. Let us tell you about this one.
Eating lentils on New Year’s Eve is a widespread tradition throughout Italy. Already ancient Romans used to eat them on the first day of the New Year as a good omen to guarantee themselves greater wealth in the year to come. Indeed, many believe that eating some on New Year’s Eve “brings money,” but why?
First, the round, flattened shape of this precious legume is reminiscent of gold coins. Furthermore, cooking them increases their volume. This suggests growth, thus increasing wealth. This is why they represent wealth and prosperity.
In the past, there was even a tradition of giving a purse full of lentils as a gift on December 31st. They are also a nutritionally valuable food, in terms of caloric intake and the considerable amount of plant fiber. We should consume them more and more often, not only on New Year’s Eve!
